Silver Memories radio service launches app

A 24/7 nostalgia radio service, Silver Memories, has launched an app for iPads and Android tablets to provide entertainment to older Australians at home in a bid to combat social isolation among the elderly.

Around one in four seniors are affected by social isolation, however, this new app is clinically proven to increase engagement, stimulate memory, spark conversation, and encourage sing-alongs and movement to music among older listeners.

The radio service believes this app will be able to help with this current coronavirus crisis through its reminiscence therapy methods.

Silver Memories is over a decade old and was created to improve the wellbeing of older Australians through music, comedy, old radio serials, and different radio segments.

The utilisation of reminiscence therapy has been proven to reduce the effects of dementia, including verbally and physically aggressive behaviours.

University research from three clinical trials found that participants who regularly listened to the radio service had improvements in their quality of life, and lower Geriatric Depression Scale and Cohen Mansfield Agitation scores.

This is why Silver Memories has a huge reputation and presence in Australian aged care facilities, with over 10,000 residents listening in to the 24/7 radio service.

Gary Thorpe, founder of Silver Memories, says, “With the release of the Silver Memories app, we can support the well-being of the elderly at home as well as in residential care through this difficult period.

“Silver Memories has proven help alleviate the risks of social isolation, depression and anxiety in the elderly.”

The app will allow for older Australians who live at home to access Silver Memories on their iPads or Android tablets.

They will be able to enjoy music, including curate music playlists, request birthday calls and songs, and test their knowledge in quizzes. There are a range of quizzes, puzzles and activities available on the app.

Lynne Kafoa, a 73 year old listener, says she has been listening to Silver Memories every day for the past 10 years.

“I love it. I’ve recently purchased an iPad to listen through the app. I particularly like the on-demand section, especially if there’s a part of the day I’m not interested in,” says Ms Kafoa.

“I love that the announcers also involve us and always chat back to us. It’s lucky we live on acreage or the neighbours may have thought I was loony – whistling and bopping around to the Radetzky March whilst hanging out the washing.”

Aged care professionals also praise the wonders of Silver Memories, which have such an obvious impact on the wellbeing of older Australians.

Diversional Therapist at Estia Health Gold Coast, Jacqui Oliver, says her clients have been listening to Silver Memories broadcasted to their TV rooms for the past four years.

“The nostalgic music and interaction Silver Memories provides our clients with completely uplifts their spirits, especially during this challenging time,” explains Jacqui.

“We have definitely seen improvements since providing our seniors with this incredible service. They are happier, more engaged and reminiscent after listening, it really is something quite unique and special to see.”
